SOHO SWIMMING POOL: I just spent four days in New York City during the most suffocating heat wave in memory. I was staying in a Soho hotel at 60 Thompson Street. Every day I walked past a small public swimming pool several times, when leaving my hotel in the morning, when returning later in the day, and at the end of the evening. In the sweltering heat, this little pool took on a powerful symbolic significance during my short stay in lower Manhattan. It became for me an inaccessible urban mirage. I could gaze at the pool surrounded by fencing, but could not jump in to cool off. The pool also took on a different aspect and ambience at different times of the day. So I began taking pictures of the pool with my iPhone every time I walked by. Here are three of those pictures: morning, daytime, night.
